The super recruiter's secret: How he recruited 50 new NITO members in one year
Can you refer as many? Geologist Morten Dethloff claims he recruited more than fifty colleagues in less than a year. He believes that all engineers and technologists should know what NITO actually does and can mean for them.
- Being a trade union gives you security in everyday life. It secures the rights you have as an employee," says Dethloff.
Maybe you know of a colleague you can recruit into NITO. You can receive NOK 1000 for each working member you refer. It is kroner that can come in handy in Christmas shopping, or maybe it can contribute to an extra gift for yourself?
Strong community is important
After seven years as a union representative at Halliburton, Dethloff has seen how crucial it is to have a strong community – especially when the workplace is characterized by reorganization and unrest.
"As a union representative, I am happy to be a help to my colleagues. I have to stand up for them and plead their case to the management," he says.
Assisting in salary negotiations, negotiating member benefits and also taking part in important discussions about the company's future are part of the employee representative's everyday life.

From pointed and sharp to more personal
Halliburton provides innovative technologies, products and services to the energy industry. In meetings with new employees, he talks about the value of being unionized:
"Some time ago, I started crass and spoke bluntly about illegality and harassment. I said that from experience, I know that you will be working a lot of overtime and you will not be paid for the overtime. The management didn't like that I said that. Dethloff does not hide the fact that he has had to adapt somewhat.
Now Dethloff uses a more personal story in meetings with non-members, and shows how NITO makes a difference for people.
"Many people recognize themselves in the fear of unpaid overtime and uncertainty in job situations. I tell them that I have saved people from being laid off, and that makes an impression.
He refers to all the help you get as a member, both a union representative who speaks on your behalf, but also the entire support system and the other member benefits from NITO.
It makes a difference
Dethloff has one clear message for all engineers in working life:
"If you want legal help, you must be a member. You have no idea how much resources NITO has – it can make the difference the day you need support. To get free employment law help , you must have been a member for at least three months, so then it is of little use to sign up on the day you really need help. Being a member provides many benefits that are useful over time," he says.
Several thousand kroner in referral prize
Dethloff doesn't think much about the referral prize, which is possible to get when you recruit new members, but he obviously appreciates the thousands of kroner that have come into his account over the years.
Most of those he has managed to sign up have signed up directly, without Dethloff wanting to be listed as recruits.
By recruiting a colleague to NITO, you contribute to strengthening the community. More members mean greater impact, both in your workplace and in the community, and even better benefits. In addition, you will receive a NOK 1000 referral bonus for each working member you refer.
How to become a Super Referrer
Here is Dethloff's advice on how you as a NITO member can easily recruit other engineers and technologists to become members:
- Meet your colleagues where they are – tell them about the membership benefits, be personal and specific
- Follow up on new employees in particular, feel free to participate with a presentation at an introductory meeting and follow up with an e-mail
- Participate in courses organized by NITO and feel free to get others to join you and thus get them to become members

- If you are an engineer or a technologist, you should choose NITO as your union, says Dethloff and wishes all other NITO members good luck in recruiting new members.
