Egil Thompson at NITO is the new head of the Competence Shift

Egil Thompson, Secretary General of NITO, is the new leader of the Competence Shift, one of ten focus areas in Skift.

The competence shift works to ensure the right knowledge on the road to a low-emission society and aims to ensure that the business community and the public sector develop and attract the right expertise.

The most important task of the competence shift is to ensure more future-oriented competence development. As the new leader, Thompson will now address this, together with Skift's members.

Without the right expertise, we will not succeed in the climate transition. Shifts and the business community must play an active role in ensuring that we build and further develop the knowledge and skills we need in the labour market of the future

The right skills are crucial

The skills shift focuses on how both the education sector, working life and political decision-makers can work more closely together to strengthen skills development in areas such as sustainability, technology, circular economy and green innovation.

In particular, Skift will contribute to:

  • To clarify what kind of expertise the green shift requires in different industries
  • Connecting business and academia more closely
  • To highlight examples of how companies succeed with systematic competence building
  • Strengthening lifelong learning and continuing and further education

Competence development has long been an important part of the business community's climate work, but in recent years the need for new knowledge and restructuring has become even clearer.

"We are in the middle of a rapid technological transition and climate change. Then we must be just as quick to invest in and build the right expertise. I am very pleased that NITO will continue to lead this work," says Bjørn K. Haugland, CEO of Skift.

Thompson takes over the task from former NITO president Trond Markussen. In the time ahead, the Competence Shift will focus on which initiatives and priorities the further work should be directed towards.

Ruter, Gjensidige, Pwc, the Norwegian University of Life Sciences and the University of Oslo are also participating in the Competence Shift.

Success stories from the Competence Shift

The shift program was established and developed through the Competence Shift. The program is an experience-based leadership development program with the goal of developing confident and competent leaders with the right skills for change.

Participants will hear from experts, researchers and inspiring voices in sustainability and management. Where do you stand as a leader in the face of an increasingly complex world? And how far should you stretch your own area of responsibility to ensure that both the company and society are moving in the right direction? These are central topics of discussion in the Shift Program.

About 10 major climate shifts

Skift – Business climate leaders collaborate across industries to help realize a low-emission society in 2050. The skills shift is one of ten major climate shifts, where senior managers discuss and implement measures on the major, transformative shifts Norwegian business and industry must go through over the next ten years.

The teams work to identify the business opportunities that lie in each shift and collaborate on what the network can do to help accelerate this.

The other climate shifts are energy, finance, circular economy, transport and mobility, green digitalisation, urban development, building and real estate, food and agriculture, and climate adaptation.
