Drones are once again in the news, and the recent incident at Copenhagen Airport (Kastrup) in September 2025 underlines the seriousness of the situation. For almost four hours, all air traffic was halted after several large, unknown drones were repeatedly observed in controlled airspace.
Danish authorities characterized the incident as "the most serious attack on Danish critical infrastructure to date" and the operator as a "capable actor". This was not a random hobby drone, but a deliberate act that demonstrated the vulnerability of critical infrastructure.
The incident, which also led to closures at several other Nordic airports and a NATO response, raises a number of technical and strategic questions for engineers and technologists, including:
- How can we reliably detect, track, and identify unauthorized drones in a complex environment like an airport?
- Which countermeasures are both effective and safe to use?
