You may have received your first job offer in a full-time position. What should your starting salary be?
Figures as of 15 January 2025. The figures are based on developments in salaries for NITO members in the private sector.
- These are good figures for you who are a newly graduated engineer. The starting salary lays the foundation for your salary development further in your career," says Sofie Olsen, head of NITO Students.
- The starting salary for engineers and technologists is higher than for many other occupational groups in society.
"There has been growth from last year's starting salary, and the figures show that engineers and technologists with higher education are in demand.
If you have been offered a starting salary that is very far from NITO's starting salary expectation or that you are not satisfied with, it may be a good idea to negotiate a little.
The employer's first offer is often just that, and many employers are prepared to have to go the extra mile.
- As an engineer, you have expertise that is very important for society. It is important that you know your value when you negotiate salary," says Olsen.
For example, you can say that you are interested in this job, but you think the salary is a bit low and ask them to come up with a new offer. Or you can make a new suggestion yourself.
But: Do not make harsh counterdemands or ultimatums, if you do not actually mean it. If you say that you will not take the job for less than a certain salary, you risk getting a no back and being left without a job offer.
This is a balancing act and it is a good idea to try, but not be too bastard.
