Saved 16,000 on insurance
Jan Børre Wærås took a thorough check of his insurance policies. He found that he could save NOK 16,000 a year – and get better terms.
Being a member of Norway's largest engineering and technology organization offers many benefits, including a good discount on insurance. It was at a meeting of NITO's business group at work that Wærås got an eye-opener that now saves him many thousands of kroner a year.
At Benteler Automotive in Raufoss, he is involved in producing suspension and bumpers for BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Porsche , Toyota, Jaguar and Landrover.

- I am Production Unit Leader for Assembly Industrial Tools, supervisor in tools, assembly, service and maintenance, he explains. Wærås is a trained automation mechanic and engineer in industrial automation. Production and maintenance of tools his specialty.
- In Norway, we are far ahead in electric cars, but southern Europe is still lagging behind in the purchase of them. It is important that we develop new products that customers have not thought of in advance," he explains.
How to get cheaper insurance?
- At the same time, we all experience that it is expensive time. Buying a car is a big investment, many people may be looking for affordable options these days. Finding solutions in production that keep prices down without compromising safety is an exciting challenge. We are constantly working to make our car parts cheaper and better," he says.
Taking a review of the insurance policies you have is a move that can do good in a time of high costs. The call became very clear at a company group meeting with the NITO members in Benteler. A representative from Tryg, NITO's insurance partner, was at the meeting and informed about the membership benefits on insurance.
- I discovered that with Tryg I could get better insurance - at a much lower price, says Wærås, who has had his insurance with another company for many years.
- I reviewed my insurance policies together with an advisor from Tryg. The old company wanted to keep me, but the car insurance alone was NOK 10,000 more expensive with them," he says.
Wærås lists some of the assurances he has; house, car, household contents, health and life insurance and an extra insurance for critical illness.

Lower price and better insurance
- As I understand it, I save around NOK 16,000 a year after switching to Tryg and using the NITO agreement. Maybe more. Now I have better coverage and a lower price," he says with a broad smile.
- Now I also treat myself to an extended accident insurance, as well as an extra insurance that protects me even better if I should get a so-called "critical illness". This provides greater security for the family.
Major differences in the market
Tryg sees that the insurance market has changed especially over the past year. Although the prices of insurance have generally increased, they find that there can still be large price differences between the various insurance companies.
Wærås encourages other NITO members to take a review:
- Don't be too loyal to the old insurance company. Maybe you are double insured or have the wrong insurance. Contacting Tryg was completely non-binding - and for me it led to several thousand kroner saved.

Apply your discounts
NITO membership can give you a lower price on insurance, but also other benefits and discounts.
- I have been on an Excel course through NITO, it made me better at using this tool in everyday work, he says. NITO offers a wide range of competence-enhancing courses.
- Nordea is NITO's banking partner, here as a NITO member I am automatically a Premium customer with my own advisor and get a good mortgage rate. The mortgage rate went down a notch when I became a Premium customer," he says.
Wærås encourages all other NITO members to be aware of the benefits they have, and to use them. He also reminds that NITO membership gives a discount on cars.
