Sleep through the intoxication first, eat pizza afterwards

How long does it take to start a fire if pizza baking goes wrong? Trond Mikal and Nils have tested this in an experiment.

Students often have little space in the kitchen. It doesn't necessarily have to be messy, but you can have a lot of kitchen utensils in terms of counter space. Therefore, it happens that kitchen utensils, plates and other things are placed on top of the hob.

Horror scenario after a night out

Imagine this scenario: You've been out to a party and come home late. Hunger gnaws, and you start making a pizza. In the absence of space on the kitchen counter, place a pizza box on top of the stove. Then you sit down on the sofa to wait for the oven to warm up. You get more and more tired and suddenly you fall asleep. It turns out that it was the hob you turned on and not the oven. What happens to the pizza box?

Trond Mikal and Nils tested this on the fire lab. Both are studying to become fire engineers at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. They placed a pizza box on top of a hot plate and turned on the heat. This is what happened:

  • After 3 minutes, smoke developed
  • After 8 minutes, the pizza box ignited
  • The heat development was so great that the hob was destroyed and had to be hauled

The gas produced in the combustion of a pizza box, for example, is highly toxic to inhale. If the fire is given the opportunity to spread without you being notified, and other substances are involved, you get a thicker and thicker layer of smoke. Finally, you can't breathe in the smoke layer without passing out.

Tips to avoid fire

Who are they?

Trond Mikal Lohne

He has a great interest in fire safety. He was inspired to become a fire engineer after seeing Andres being grilled alive in the "With life as a stake" series that aired on NRK. The fact that water can prevent the skin from being burned he finds very exciting.

- The most exciting thing about the education is learning about what measures make it possible to prevent catastrophic fires. We get a good understanding of how fires develop over time. And how to limit the consequences of flames, smoke and high heat," he says.

Nils Kristian Lyshaug

He has extensive experience with fire technical installations through having worked as an electrician. He previously worked with installing fire alarm systems, emergency lights, door control, ventilation control and elevator control, among other things. He has a lot of focus on fire safety both in his own home, and in the industry.

- I have always been fascinated by the technology I have worked with. This experience made me choose to start a bachelor's degree in fire safety," he says.
