Biomedical laboratory technician day 2025: - You are part of the solution

"Through a high level of expertise, professional integrity and a strong desire for development, biomedical laboratory technicians contribute to more accurate diagnostics, more efficient patient pathways and a more sustainable health service," says Minister of Health and Care Services Jan Christian Vestre.

The Minister of Health and Care Services states that this year's theme for the Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day is both large and important with a view to the future.

On 15 April, the International Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day is celebrated, and it is the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) that decides the theme for the Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day.

For 2025 and 2026, the theme is: "Biomedical laboratory technicians promote sustainable laboratory services". This focuses on how biomedical laboratory technicians can contribute to both better diagnostics and a more environmentally friendly health service.

- The minister is absolutely right when he points out that this year's theme for the Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day is future-oriented. It is an important and topical topic that puts the spotlight on our role as solution-oriented and innovative in a technological development," says Chair of the Board of NITO BFI, Kaja Marienborg.

Make wise and sustainable choices

In recent years, NITO BFI has become a participant and contributor in the "Wise Choices" and "Don't Prick Me Without Reason" campaigns.

We are conducting diagnostic work under great pressure, more and more patients need to be diagnosed and treated, while budgets are getting smaller.

- It is estimated that a third of all examinations, examinations and treatments are unnecessary, and in the worst case, harmful to patients, and in Denmark, studies show that 20 percent of all blood sample analyses can be avoided. It leads to an overuse of laboratory services, has little medical value and can lead to harm to patients.

For the laboratories, it is important to avoid unnecessary sampling and analyses. It is good patient care, and enables sustainable use of biomedical laboratory scientists, at a time of shortage of professionals.

In the coming years, biomedical laboratory technicians will continue to promote sustainable laboratory services:

- Through continuous innovation and interdisciplinary collaboration, we deliver precise diagnoses, efficient work processes and a sustainable health service. By optimising resources and smarter choice of equipment and analyses, the biomedical laboratory technicians will contribute to a more sustainable healthcare system.

Must work smarter

Biomedical laboratory technicians also play an important role in reducing the environmental impact of laboratories:

"We can make a difference by working smarter and more sustainably, both in the choice of equipment, chemicals and disposable equipment," the chairman of the board points out.

Through the Green Hospital project, the biomedical laboratory technicians are already working to reduce waste and energy consumption, for example by prioritising digital solutions and using less paper.

Remember to celebrate Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day

- All this commitment and work for a more sustainable health service also deserves to be celebrated. Remember that this is their day. Hold professional lectures, have stands for patients and other professional groups or mark the day by having a local celebration in the department, the chair of the professional board encourages.

- Thank you very much for the fantastic job you do every single day, and on behalf of the professional board of NITO BFI, happy birthday!
