They are the Biomedical Laboratory Technicians of the Year in 2024

This year, the award for biomedical laboratory technician of the year is shared between Ingvild Eide and Brit Valaas Viddal

The award for Biomedical Laboratory Technician of the Year was established in 2020, and is awarded by the NITO Institute of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences. The prize is awarded annually.

Brit Valaas Viddal is head of the Department of Medical Biochemistry and Blood Bank, Helse Møre og Romsdal. Ingvild Eide is a medical laboratory technician at St. Olav's Hospital in Trondheim.

- I am honored and grateful to receive the award. There will be a great need for bioengineers in the future, and I would like to see even more people in the field," says Viddal.

- I am incredibly proud and touched to receive the award for Bioengineer of the Year 2024, says Ingvild Eide. It is important and very fun to profile the biomedical laboratory technician profession, since there are many who do not know what a biomedical laboratory technician is and how important we are to hospital operations. There are many hard-working and great bioengineers in Norway, and I am proud to be one of them," she says.

Lifting the biomedical laboratory technician profession

In the justification for the award, Kaja Marienborg, chair of the professional board of NITO BFI, says that it has been emphasized that both Viddal and Eide have a commitment that is contagious, and that they both highlight the biomedical laboratory technician profession and contribute to professional commitment.

- Brit Valaas Viddal has been a clear voice in the professional debate for a number of years. She speaks on behalf of the most vulnerable patient group, the newborns, when she gives evidence-based lectures on gentle blood sampling. As a former head of NITO BFI, she was involved in implementing specialist approval, developing advisory committees and strengthening the international work in the association.

- Ingvild Eide communicates about the biomedical laboratory technician profession in an exemplary way, with a special commitment to students and recruitment to the profession. In recent years, she has been an important ambassador for the biomedical laboratory technician profession and NITO. The professional board praises Ingvild for being fearless, and that she dares to break barriers in her dissemination.

On behalf of NITO BFI and the professional board, I would like to congratulate Brit Valaas Viddal and Ingvild Eide with the title of Biomedical Laboratory Engineer of the Year 2024.

Professional role models

Marienborg explains that the award is intended to highlight and highlight biomedical laboratory technicians who have distinguished themselves as outstanding ambassadors for the field of biomedical laboratory sciences.

The purpose of the award is to recognise individuals who are inspiring professional role models for young biomedical laboratory scientists.

- This year, the academic board was overwhelmed by a record number of nominations, and many candidates who distinguished themselves both by their professionalism, communication skills and visibility. We were left with two candidates who stood out, and the academic board therefore decided to share the prize," Marienborg concludes.
