Final momentum in the compensation case for oil pioneers

"We are pleased that the Government is now taking concrete steps towards establishing a compensation scheme for oil pioneers," says Kjetil Lein, President of NITO, in connection with the presentation of the revised national budget today.

The oil pioneers can finally expect compensation for the health damage they suffered because of their work at the start of the Norwegian oil adventure.

NOK 14 million is being set aside to establish a system that can handle applications for compensation to those who have suffered health injuries while working with hazardous chemicals offshore in the revised national budget.

This means that the state can start processing applications and paying out compensation from the start of 2026.

Important step

"We are pleased that the government is now taking concrete steps towards establishing a compensation scheme for oil pioneers. This is an important step towards recognising the efforts these workers have made to build up Norway's oil industry," says Kjetil Lein, President of NITO.

NITO is positive that the government is now following up on the Storting's decision and setting aside funds to establish the compensation scheme for oil pioneers.

Still a way to go

It is an important and correct step in recognising the efforts of those who built the foundation for Norway's oil adventure – often under unjustifiable conditions that led to serious illness and damage to health.

At the same time, we know that compliance with the regulations is still not good enough. The work for a safe and responsible working life must continue.
