NITO had many breakthroughs in the national budget for 2026

This week, the national budget for 2026 was finalized. NITO is making an impact in several areas that strengthen Norway's ability to adapt, competence and a secure working life.

"Several of the priorities in the national budget respond directly to the challenges NITO has raised. It shows that we are being listened to – and that clear, knowledge-based input actually produces results," says NITO President Kjetil Lein.

In connection with the budget work, NITO has sent input to the Government and the Storting and been consulted in seven of the Storting's committees. Several of our demands have now been followed up in the final budget. Here are some of the most important breakthroughs:

More money for the municipalities

The municipalities are the first line of critical infrastructure such as water, sewerage, energy, buildings and health. A strengthened municipal economy makes it possible to invest in modernisation, emergency preparedness and expertise – and not least attract and retain engineers and technologists who make the wheels of society turn.

The Armed Forces are strengthened in line with the long-term plan

The Government is following up the long-term plan for the defence sector. This lays the foundation for a stronger and more modern defence sector, with an increased need for expertise, infrastructure and technology.

NITO expects that the initiative will also facilitate growth opportunities for Norwegian industry and technology companies.

The Government appoints a restructuring commission

NITO has called for measures to ensure that Norway retains and further develops engineering and technology expertise, strengthens existing jobs while laying the foundation for new ones.

We are therefore pleased that the Government is appointing a restructuring commission, which will prepare a national strategy for high value creation, full employment and a just, green transition in line with Norway's climate commitments.

The Labour Inspection Authority is strengthened

A serious, safe and well-functioning working life is one of NITO's core priorities. The increased allocations to the Labour Inspection Authority will contribute to better control, strengthened follow-up and a more robust working life throughout the country.

Student financial aid is linked to the basic amount in the National Insurance Scheme

This is a long-awaited breakthrough for NITO Students and the student movement. When student support is now linked to the basic amount (G), students will have a more predictable and sustainable economy over time.

This strengthens recruitment to the technology and science subjects, and is important for securing the skills needs of the future.

- Our members are in the middle of everyday challenges and know where the shoe pinches. For them, this is about a better framework for doing the job they are trained for, and safe working conditions in a time of major changes. It is their experiences that give weight to the politics we influence," says Lein.
