The right to believe, think and love

Mark Pride for those who are not allowed in Hungary.

The Hungarian government claims that Pride events expose minors to content that violates Hungary's 2021 "Child Protection Law," which prohibits the "portrayal or promotion" of homosexuality or gender reassignment for people under the age of 18.

NITO disagrees

"Taking part in Pride is in the same way as raising the rainbow flag, taking a stand for basic human rights – and saying clearly that you believe queers should be able to love who we want and be who we are."

In addition, NITO supports freedom of assembly. The opportunity to gather in groups to peacefully promote ideas and values you believe in is a critical part of a well-functioning democracy.

The European trade union federation IndustriAll Europe also supports this.

Equal rights for all

At NITO, we celebrate Pride – not only with rainbow colours, but with clear support, and this year an extra finger on the Hungarian government.

"We stand up for everyone with a different sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. Pride is about celebration, community and freedom – but also about struggle and seriousness," says bioengineer Jessica Stenholm, who is a member of NITO's ethics committee.

Rights do not come by themselves, we as a trade union know that well.

Prohibition and the death penalty

NITO president, Kjetil Lein, points out that homosexuality is still banned in over 70 countries, and that in 12 of them you can be punished with death – just for loving the wrong person.

"We also see what is happening here at home. Many people still hide who they are – at work, in their family, in their group of friends. Pride is a cheer, a support and a reminder: You are not alone. Everyone is welcome.

Join us in celebrating – stand with us at NITO for international solidarity and for being able to be yourself in working life," Lein encourages.
