We will not have increased blood preparedness without people

The country's blood preparedness is dependent on enough biomedical laboratory scientists. "In order for Norway to be adequately prepared and equipped in the face of crises, war and demographic changes, it is important to educate enough personnel with the right skills," says Heidi Andersen, head of NITO BFI, in connection with the revised national budget.

The blood banks do not have enough personnel resources to work with blood preparedness. More blood donors are needed, but it is difficult to achieve because there is a low staffing in the blood banks.

"The blood bank has enough to handle day-to-day operations," says Andersen, head of the Department of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences (NITO BFI). For many years, NITO has called for more study places for biomedical laboratory technicians in Innlandet and had wanted 30 new study places in Innlandet. Next year, we want 100 new study places across the country.

Unfortunately, the revised national budget does not address increased funding for study places in particularly needed subject areas for society.

NITO has previously called for study places to educate enough biomedical laboratory scientists. In order for Norway to be adequately prepared and equipped in the face of crises, war and demographic changes, it is important to educate enough personnel with the right skills who can staff positions that are important to society.
