Are the children going to move away from home? These assurances are important

When the children leave the nest, insurance may not be the first thing they think of, but there are three insurances in particular that are important to have. Check if they have to buy them themselves, or if they are covered through yours.

The financial situation of students can often be tight, and there is probably a lot you would rather spend money on than insurance. But accidents can happen, and if something goes wrong, it can have major financial consequences if you are not properly insured.

A student who moves away from home should at least have contents, travel and accident insurance.

Have to buy your own or covered by the parents?

A common question is: Do the children need to buy their own insurance when they move away from home, or are they covered through their parents? The answer is that it can vary.

Children and young people living at home are often covered by their parents' insurance until they reach a certain age, as long as they have the same registered address as them. However, the terms vary from agreement to agreement, and there may be exceptions that are important to be aware of. Be sure to go through the agreements carefully to make sure that the children are adequately covered.

If the children change their registered address, they must buy their own insurance anyway.

Home contents insurance

If you have NITO Home Contents Insurance, your child's contents are also insured at the new place of residence. However, keep the following in mind:

  • Applies to students who live temporarily away from the place of insurance, if the dormitory/residence is rented and not owned.
  • The child must be registered in the National Population Register at the same address as the parents (not registered move).
  • Applies to temporary relocation in the Nordic region.
  • Shared housing as a whole is not covered, only applies to the child's belongings that are locked in their own room, not belongings that are stored in a common area.

Need additional valuables insurance?

Very valuable individual items should also be insured with a separate valuables insurance.

Valuables insurance also applies outside the home. Examples of items that may need such value insurance: expensive watches, diamond jewelry, instruments, weapons, expensive bicycles, national costumes, drones, etc.

Items insured in this way are covered against both "loss of" and "damage to", up to the sum insured for the individual item.

Travel insurance

Is there anything parents who have NITO Travel Insurance need to be particularly aware of?

It is said that most accidents happen in the home, but unfortunately not all. With travel insurance, your children will also be well covered for accidents and, not least, illness that occurs when they are on shorter or longer trips.

If you have chosen NITO Family Travel Insurance, your children will be covered by this until the end of the year they turn 21. After this, they must take out their own travel insurance.

It is also easy to be robbed of belongings when you are traveling. Whether you are on a tram or bus on the way to the city, in the shops or you are on a somewhat longer holiday trip in or outside Norway.

NITO Travel Insurance applies to all types of trips with a duration of up to 90 days.

NITO Travel Insurance covers several types of damage, and has higher sums insured than a regular travel insurance. The insurance applies every day – all year round – and has no requirements for accommodation.

Do you have children over the age of 21 living at home? Then you can buy travel insurance for your children directly from Tryg with a 30% member discount. When the children change their registered address, they must buy their own travel insurance.

Accident insurance

According to the Norwegian Institute of Public Health, more than 300,000 people are injured every year. The most common injuries occur in accidents at home and during leisure activities. Most young and adult men are injured in leisure accidents.

Accident insurance gives you financial security if you are the victim of an accident and suffer injuries as a result of it.

If you are injured in an accident, you will get immediate help from a doctor or at a hospital, but some accident injuries need long and specialized treatment and some will also affect you for the rest of your life.

What applies to NITO Accident Insurance? Is there anything parents need to pay special attention to?

If you have NITO Extended Accident Insurance, the insurance applies to the whole family. The sum insured is adapted to your family composition at the time of the accident.

It is important to be aware of the following:

  • The member's own children are covered for the rest of the year they turn 21
  • The member's spouse or cohabitant's children from a previous relationship are also insured when they have the same address as the member in the National Population Register.
  • Are your children going to study abroad? The insured must be a member of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme or equivalent public insurance scheme in the Nordic countries to be covered. If the member resigns from membership of the Norwegian National Insurance Scheme or equivalent public insurance scheme in the Nordic region, NITO Extended Accident Insurance will cease
