Why should I have child insurance?

Do I need to insure my child? Do I really need child insurance? We tell you why child insurance is important and how you as a NITO member get an extra good price on the child insurance.

What is Child Insurance?

What is Child Insurance?

Child insurance can help the family financially with extra expenses if the child becomes ill or suffers an accident. A child insurance covers, among other things, additional expenses for necessary care and supervision, unemployment benefits in connection with hospital stays, expenses for technical aids and remodeling of housing. The insurance is a supplement to public benefits, and can be purchased from the age of three months and covers the child until the age of 26.

What a child insurance policy contains can vary from insurance company to insurance company. How extensive a child insurance policy can be will therefore vary. There are essentially two variants.

  1. A pure accident insurance for children that provides compensation in the event of medical disability due to an accident. The insurance does not require a health certificate.
  2. A more comprehensive child insurance that covers, among other things, medical disability after accident and illness. The insurance can also be extended to include treatment insurance, disability pension and disability capital. This insurance requires one to fill out a health certificate when purchasing it.
When should I buy child insurance?

A good child research requires that you submit a health certificate for the child. The insurance should therefore be purchased when the child is healthy so that you avoid restrictions through reservations or cannot buy insurance for the child.

Do I need to have child insurance?

Child insurance is an important insurance because it provides extra financial security beyond what will be covered by the National Insurance Scheme.

Having disability compensation included in a child insurance policy is important. Should your child become incapacitated, a child insurance with disability cover could be an extra help with, for example, buying your own home and help ensure a more secure financial future.

Disability can be secured through two different types of coverage – disability pension and/or disability capital.

A disability pension gives your child monthly payments if he or she becomes at least 50 per cent incapacitated for twelve consecutive months after the age of 18. Disability pension from the insurance is paid right up to the age of 67, and is in addition to public benefits.

Disability capital as part of the child insurance provides a one-off payment of NOK 900,000 if the child is declared at least 50 per cent permanently incapacitated after the age of 18.

Not everyone becomes incapacitated even if they receive a degree of medical disability.
Medical disability applies to around 50 per cent of all reported cases under child insurance. A child insurance that also covers medical disability due to illness, in addition to accidents, is therefore important. Be aware that not all insurance companies have a child insurance policy that covers this. In Tryg's child insurance Child Extra, medical disability as a result of illness is included, here you as a NITO member also get a 30 percent discount.
