How do we deal with ethical dilemmas? Why is ethics important to members, union representatives and employees of NITO?
Technological advances and globalization challenge us in new ways, both as citizens, engineers/technologists and union representatives.
Digitalisation, robotisation, the use of automated decision-making processes, cross-border working life and increasingly fluid boundaries between working hours and leisure time are leading to new ethical dilemmas.
On a day-to-day basis, we will face situations that challenge us:
- A patient "refuses to let someone like you" take the blood sample that has been ordered.
- You know that your company's IT solutions collect and store more information than most people realize.
- You are a spectator of backbiting, sloppy comments and the use of domination techniques at work.
Ethical reflections help you assess situations and make wise decisions by systematically analyzing issues and alternatives.
There may be several solutions
Ethics gives us neither recommendations nor orders. Instead, it gives us practical tools to distinguish between good and bad reasons, and thus be able to make wise decisions.
To help you along the way, NITO has created a thematic booklet on ethics – Ethics for Engineers and Technologists. We hope that this booklet will provide inspiration and good methods to tackle ethical issues you face, whether it is at work or privately.

Guidelines for whistleblowing in NITO
NITO has prepared common guidelines for whistleblowing, which apply to both employees and union representatives, to ensure that everyone is familiar with the process for reporting problems.
The Secretary General is responsible for training in the routine. These guidelines can also serve as a template for union representatives who wish to develop whistleblowing routines in their own business.

Exciting courses for ethics enthusiasts
An exciting and topical thematic course in ethics is arranged annually as part of NITO's union representative training.
Inspiring lecturers known from the public debate help to make the course relevant and relevant to the participants. The course has received very good feedback and is open to all members.
Ethics and Artificial Intelligence
As a member of the Association of Nordic Engineers (ANE), NITO focuses on artificial intelligence and ethics. ANE has arranged hackathons for engineers with the aim of solving AI challenges. Be challenged and read about the results of the Nordic hackathon on artificial intelligence.
