Microsoft Fabric Fundamentals Course

Microsoft Fabric is Microsoft's unified cloud platform for data and analytics. More and more Norwegian companies are using the platform, and the need for basic Fabric expertise is growing rapidly – both among developers, analysts and those who will manage the data platform.

This course gives you a hands-on introduction to the entire platform: You'll learn how OneLake works as a common storage layer, how to ingest and transform data with Data Factory and Spark notebooks, how to model data in lakehouses and warehouses according to the medallion architecture (bronze/silver/gold), and how to build reports in Power BI with Direct Lake. We will also touch on real-time analytics, Copilot, and basic security and governance. Throughout the course, you build a complete end-to-end solution – from raw data to finished report.

What you will learn on the course

  • Understand the fabric platform structure: workloads, OneLake, workspaces, and the capacity model (F-SKU)
  • Ingest data with pipelines and Dataflows Gen2, and transform data with Spark notebooks (PySpark)
  • Structure data in the lakehouse and warehouse according to the medallion architecture, and know when to choose what
  • Build semantic models and Power BI reports directly on OneLake with Direct Lake mode
  • Know the possibilities of Real-Time Intelligence and Copilot in Fabric
  • Basic security, sharing, and governance: workspace roles, OneLake security, and capacity monitoring

Course completion

The course is conducted physically over two days and alternates between short professional reviews, demonstrations and practical exercises (labs). About half of the time is spent on hands-on work, where the participants build a coherent solution step by step: The dataset collected in the first exercise follows the participants throughout the course until the final report. The course concludes with a case assignment in pairs, where participants outline a holistic fabric architecture for a realistic scenario. There will be plenty of opportunity for questions and discussion along the way.

Day 1 – The platform, storage and data integration

  • Welcome, setup and access to the course environment
  • Introduction to Microsoft Fabric: The SaaS model, workloads, and capacity
  • OneLake and lakehouse: Delta format, shortcuts and medallion architecture
  • Lab : Create workspace and lakehouse, load data
  • Lunch
  • Data Factory: Pipelines and Dataflows Gen2
  • Lab : Building a data acquisition pipeline
  • Data engineering with notebooks and Spark
  • Lab : Transforming Data from Bronze to Silver
  • Summary and questions

Day 2 – Analysis, reporting and management

  • Short review from day 1
  • Data warehouse and SQL analytics endpoint: lakehouse vs. warehouse
  • Lab : Building the gold layer with T-SQL
  • Power BI and semantic models: Direct Lake, relationships, and measures
  • Lunch
  • Lab : Building Semantic Model and Report
  • Real-Time Intelligence: event streams, KQL and notifications (demo and short exercise)
  • Security, sharing, and governance: roles, OneLake security, and capacity monitoring
  • Final case assignment with review in plenary
  • The way forward: certification (DP-600/DP-700), questions and evaluation

Practical information

  • Prerequisites: No prior knowledge of Fabric is required. Basic knowledge of SQL and/or Python is an advantage for the lab exercises, but not a requirement – the exercises have ready-made code examples.
  • Other things participants should know: Bring your own laptop. Most of the work is done in a web browser. Participants get access to a common training environment in Microsoft Fabric. Information about logging in will be sent out before the start of the course. Course materials, lab instructions and datasets are distributed digitally and can be used further after the course.
  • Course time: Both course days begin at 09:00 and end at 17:00. The course will be held physically, in central Oslo. You will be sent an address in advance of the course.
  • Cancellation: If you cancel one of our professional courses or conferences after the registration deadline, a fee of 20 percent of the course or conference price will be charged. Thomas Boge

Course instructor Thomas Boge is a data platform architect with extensive experience from designing and implementing data platforms in Azure, including Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Data Factory, Databricks and Power BI. He has worked with Fabric ever since the private preview phase, in close collaboration with Microsoft, and has developed reference architectures and enterprise lakehouse solutions for some of Norway's largest companies.

Ronny Wilhelmsen Hagen

Course instructor Ronny Wilhelmsen Hagen is a senior data engineer and analytics engineer with extensive experience in the design and development of modern data platforms, including Microsoft Fabric, Azure Synapse, Data Factory, Databricks and Power BI. He has built several end-to-end solutions in Fabric—from data capture and medallion architecture to semantic models and reports in Power BI—for businesses in transportation, industrial, banking, finance, and more. Ronny is one of the foremost resources in semantic modeling and DAX, and has delivered high-performance models on billions of volumes of transaction data. He regularly holds practical courses in Power BI, and is interested in hands-on learning.
