Practical introduction to the Machinery Regulations

The Machinery Regulations and the Machinery Directive set the framework for ensuring the safety of both people and the environment. Finally, in order to document that the requirements are met, the machine must have a CE mark.

But do your machines have the necessary documentation in place? Do you know how to prepare this documentation yourself and CE mark a machine you have made? What is actually defined as a machine, and can the CE marking be lost if the machine is rebuilt? What is actually required to CE mark a machine?

What you will learn on the course

  • The structure and function of the Machinery Regulations: You get an overview of how the Machinery Directive is structured and how it works in practice.

  • Responsibilities and definition of machine: You will learn what is defined as a machine, and who is responsible for compliance and safety.

  • Duties of manufacturers and technical requirements: The course gives you insight into the duties of the manufacturer and the technical requirements that apply to CE marking.

  • Risk assessment and practical exercises: You will be introduced to risk assessment methods and work with practical examples, including with the help of virtual trips.

  • Relationship to standards and other regulations: You will learn about the relationship between the Machinery Regulations, harmonised standards and other relevant directives and regulations.

  • Changes to the regulations from 2027: What the new Machinery Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 means for responsibility, documentation and technical requirements – and how this affects CE marking, conformity assessment and the use of digital and AI-based solutions.

The Machinery Regulations and the Machinery Directive are central for everyone who works with the production and sale of machinery in Europe. In this course, you will get a practical introduction to how to understand and navigate the regulations, so that you will be confident in meeting all legal requirements for CE marking. Through discussion and assessment of specific examples, you will learn how to translate the knowledge directly into your own working day.
