National costume insurance: What insurance does my national costume cover?
The bunad costs a lot and for many it has a great sentimental value. We give you the answer to which insurance covers the national costume when an accident occurs.
As a general rule, home contents insurance will be able to help you if the national costume is damaged or stolen while it is at home, while travel insurance will be able to help if it is stolen on shorter or longer trips.
However, it may be wise to consider valuables insurance to obtain full compensation for the national costume – regardless of where it is located.

A bunad can quickly cost somewhere between 30,000 and 60,000 kroner, depending on how much silver it has and what material the party garment is made of. Then it is good to know that NITO Home Contents Insurance also applies to your national costume.
- Home contents insurance covers all damage, including to the national costume, that is caused by burglary, fire and water in the home
- The bunad is also covered for accidental damage in the home up to the sum insured on NITO Home Contents Insurance
- Outside the home, the national costume is covered for accidental damage up to the sum insured – throughout the Nordic region. Outside the Nordic region, it is covered by up to NOK 40,000
- Theft of national costumes outside the home in the Nordic countries is covered by up to NOK 40,000
- Are you going on a trip with the national costume? Then you should familiarize yourself with what is covered and what is not covered on both your contents and travel insurance
In order for you to be covered against even the smallest damage and theft, NITO recommends that you take out a separate valuables insurance for your national costume.
For example, a regular travel insurance usually only covers up to NOK 30,000 for individual items.
Valuables insurance provides extra security
Should you lose the national costume silver, this is not included in NITO Home Contents Insurance. Therefore, it is smart to buy a separate valuables insurance for the national costume, some would call it national costume insurance.
This type of insurance covers all sudden and unforeseen damages.
It can be stains that don't go away, faint marks, tears and silver that falls off. In the vernacular, this insurance is often referred to as "blunder insurance".
Valuables insurance can help you both if the national costume is damaged or stolen.
