Do I need to insure my drone?

Drones with a camera or weight over 250 grams must have liability insurance. Check what applies and how you can insure your drone correctly.

What happens if I hurt someone with my drone? What happens if I crash my drone? Who is responsible and who has to pay?

In Norway, there is a requirement that everyone with drones that has a camera or weight over 250 grams must have a drone liability insurance that covers up to 750,000 SDRs (approx. 10.7 MNOK) per claim.

Statutory liability insurance is included in NITO Home Contents Insurance

In January 2021, NITO Home Contents Insurance was expanded to cover drone liability insurance. With NITO's best-selling and good insurance on contents, you are covered if the drone damages other people or other people's property during private use.

- If you end up in a situation where your drone damages a person or other people's property, you can be made financially responsible, says Einar Brekken, product manager at Tryg.

Just as car owners must have liability insurance, it is now required by law for drone owners to have liability insurance.

- NITO Home Contents Insurance covers the legal liability for damages for drones you as a private individual may get into. If you use the drone exclusively for private recreation, you therefore do not need to take out separate drone insurance to cover this liability if you have NITO's home contents insurance," says Brekken.

Did you know that NITO has its own professional network on drones?

This is a network for those who work with drone technology related to drones on land, in the sea or in the air.

When should I buy drone insurance?

- If you want to be covered for theft outside the home or have a drone worth more than NOK 40,000, you should take out your own drone insurance, says Brekken.

Furthermore, he points out that if you use the drone for business or travel outside the Nordic region, you must take out separate drone insurance. So if you have a drone for less than NOK 40,000 that you use privately and stay within the Nordic region, you are probably well enough covered with NITO Home Contents Insurance.

The main difference between separate drone insurance and NITO Home Contents Insurance:

NITO Home Contents Insurance – Drone Coverage

  • Covers theft at the point of insurance
  • Deductible of NOK 2000
  • Applies to injuries that occur in the Nordic region

* If you have NITO Travel Insurance, you will be covered for damage and theft of the drone outside the home up to NOK 40,000.

Own drone insurance

  • Covers theft also outside the place of insurance
  • Deductible of NOK 1,000
  • Applies to injuries that occur in Europe

Drones for businesses

It is important to clarify the difference between private use and use in business activities. If you earn money from your drone use, for example by selling photos and videos, or by using the drone in a work context, you must have separate liability insurance that covers business activities. There are no home contents insurance policies that cover this form of use.

Requirements for drone owners

If you are a drone enthusiast, you are probably fully aware that the new regulations now require online courses, exams and registration in the Civil Aviation Authority's register. This applies even if the drone is for recreational and private use.

If you have a drone that weighs more than 250 grams, or that has a camera, you must:

  • Taking out insurance for liability (included in NITO Home Contents Insurance)
  • Register the drone with the Civil Aviation Authority of Norway on flydrone.no
