Electric scooter insurance: Legal requirements you need to know

Electric scooters are classified as "small electric motor vehicles" and are covered by the Motor Liability Act. This means that all electric scooters that travel between 10-20 km/h must have liability insurance - just like cars.
Rules you need to follow
Insurance obligation: All electric scooters that can drive between 10-20 km/h must have statutory liability insurance.
- Blood alcohol limit: Same blood alcohol limit as for cars (0.2 per thousand).
- Age limit: Minimum twelve years to ride an electric scooter.
- Helmet obligation: Children under the age of 15 must wear a helmet.
- Speed limit: Electric scooters that can be modified to over 20 km/h via app or other solutions are illegal.
If you have not taken out the statutory liability insurance in the event of an accident, you are responsible for the compensation amounts. Something you can be sentenced to pay, and which can amount to large sums of money.
