How to succeed with digitalisation and AI in practice

For May Lisbeth, the study Strategic Management of Digital Processes and AI provided security, structure and tools she uses in her job every day. Now she shares what she believes actually creates value and what it takes to succeed in practice.

Technology is only a tool

When May Lisbeth Øversveen took  the Executive further education in Strategic Management of Digital Processes and AI, she wanted to both formally strengthen her skills and get tools she could use directly in working life. Today, she works as a Principal data management professional at Capgemini, where she assists companies with data strategy and strategic management related to data and AI initiatives.

The most important thing she is left with is a clearer understanding of what actually creates value in digital transformation.

"Technology is not the end in itself – it is a tool. First, you need to understand the needs and how it adds value to the business. It is just as important to understand the people in the organization and the culture in which you want to succeed, May Lisbeth points out.

For May Lisbeth, the course was a reminder that values, people and culture must be central to the work of change.

About Strategic Management of Digital Processes and AI

  • Duration: 1 semester
  • Credits: 10 credits
  • Possibility: Can be part of an experience-based Master of Management at OsloMet
  • Availability: Offered in collaboration between NITO and OsloMet, starting in the autumn
  • Implementation: The programme is fully digital and consists of video lectures, case discussions and digital learning activities. During the semester, five digital gatherings will be held with a focus on discussion, presentations and supervision. The students work closely together and act as learning partners for each other.
  • Examination: Individual term paper based on a change or restructuring project from your own working day

A practical study that can be used in your own working day

One of the strengths of the further education is that it is practically oriented. The participants work on a concrete change project from their own working day, which makes the learning relevant and applicable from the start. For May Lisbeth, this provided both new perspectives and greater confidence in how she can tackle complex challenges.

She particularly highlights the work on strategic frameworks as useful.

- It has made me more structured in the way I assess options for action, and given me more tools in my argumentation when I want to create understanding and gain traction in organizations, she says.

The course has also strengthened her awareness of how crucial communication is in change processes – especially when reaching people with different backgrounds, roles and points of view.

Important insight for everyone who works with digitalization and AI

Many companies believe they have come further in their digital maturity than they actually have. At the same time, there is great interest in AI, but often less understanding of what actually needs to be in place to realise the benefits. That is precisely why May Lisbeth believes that this further education is particularly relevant for those who work strategically with digital maturity, digitalisation and AI initiatives.

To others who are considering the programme, but are unsure whether it is relevant, her advice is clear:

- If you work with change, development or digitalization, you will get a lot out of taking the course, you will not only get professional replenishment, but also a broad toolbox you can use in your own business and a better basis for linking technology more closely to business value, emphasizes May Lisbeth.
