Life insurance: A security in everyday life

When Ingunn Nordli Ørmen suddenly lost her husband, she was left alone with two children, a house and a new reality. Fortunately, they had made an important choice – and it turned out to make a big difference.

"I Thought I Was Too Young to Be a Widow"

In the autumn of 2023, life was turned upside down for Ingunn Nordli Ørmen. Her husband suffered a heart attack and died after a few days in hospital. Suddenly, she was alone with two teenage children, a detached house, a cabin – and a future she had never imagined.

"It's sad that my children will grow up without their dad here. I thought I was far too young to be a widow," says Nordli Ørmen.

The security they didn't know they would need

In 2020, Ingunn and her husband took a review of their insurance policies – completely at random. An insuranceadvisor recommended that they take out life insurance.

"We actually thought: How likely is it that we are going to need this?" But we started to get a little older and said: 'Why not?' and I'm very happy about that today," she says.

They chose life insurance through the collaboration between NITO and Tryg Forsikring.

  • You decide who the insurance will be paid to (spouse, cohabitant or children)

Financial security in a chaotic time

When her husband died, life insurance became a crucial support.

"Life insurance helpedto save the financial situation. When you are left alone with a house and all the responsibility for the children, it is a huge relief to have a decent economy.

The payment from Tryg was NOK 900,000. Together with funds from other insurance policies and her own savings, she was able to pay out the children from her father's inheritance and start planning a new everyday life.

"I've beengiven more leeway"

Following a recommendation, Ingunn chose to carry out private probate, instead of sitting in an undivided estate. She was 48 years old at the time – young enough that it was a good idea to clean up now, rather than wait.

"NowI've paid off the children and bought a new home that is being built now and will be ready in two years, which is more centrally located and future-oriented – a place I can live for a long time.

Today, her finances are on a par with what they were before her death, and she describes a new freedom:

"The payments have given me more leeway.

The choice she and her husband made in 2020 became more than a financial security. It became an anchor in a time of uncertainty – and the start ofa new path forward.

A word of advice to others: Don't wait

After the experience, Ingunn has been open about how important it was to have the insurance in place.

"You never know what will happen around the next corner. I recommend everyone to have life insurance – and not least to talk to their partner about financial agreements such as separate property, inheritance and funds.

A step further

Although grief is still a part of everyday life, Ingunn has a brighter outlook on the future.

"Things are goinga year better now. I have a job I enjoy, good finances and am open and honest with myself and those around me.

The choice she and her husband made in 2020 became more than a financial security. It became an anchor in a time of uncertainty – and the start of a new path forward.
