Trym received the NITO award
"It means a lot to me to get recognition for the work I have put in," says Trym Bjerkvik.
AI solution to improve home care services
The 25-year-old from Bergen has a degree in computer engineering from Western Norway University of Applied Sciences. Later, he took a master's degree in computer science with a specialization in optimization from the University of Bergen.
"My master's thesis is about how we can use artificial intelligence to optimize route planning in the home care services. I have developed a model that is based on deep reinforcement learning that creates smarter and more robust work plans. The goal is to reduce delays and free up more time for patients," says Bjerkvik.
"The thesis shows that the method has the potential to improve planning in the home care services in practice, not just theoretically. The results are based on real data and suggest that delays can be reduced and routes made more robust. At the same time, this requires further development before it can be used, either through new master's theses or as part of a research fellow," he adds.
Quickly got a job
He got a job at BKK, one of Norway's largest distributors of electrical energy, right after his studies.
"BKK is a very good workplace where I enjoy it. For me, it is important to be a place where you both thrive and can develop further, both professionally and personally. I hope to use my education to contribute with good technological solutions, while at the same time continuing to learn.
It is not without reason that he has chosen to become a technologist.
"I like to develop new ideas. Gradually, I became more and more interested in technology, and therefore it was appropriate to become a computer engineer. After the bachelor's degree, I wanted to immerse myself more theoretically, and then computer science and optimization suited me very well.
Why did you choose to join NITO?
"I enrolled in the first year of the bachelor's degree as a natural part of the start of my studies. It has been useful to have access to both good insurance schemes and various courses and events along the way," he concludes.
