Nuclear power: Norway's most inflamed energy debate – what do we really know?

Nuclear power engages, polarizes and provokes. But before Norway can make an informed choice, we must ask ourselves: do we have the expertise required? NITO invited two of Norway's leading experts to respond.

The webinar was held on 30 April 2025. Watch the recording below.

The Nuclear Power Committee has submitted its report, and the debate has flared up again. There are plenty of opinions – but the debate needs to be more insight-based. In this webinar, we go behind the headlines and look at what is actually required in terms of expertise to build, operate and understand nuclear power in a Norwegian context.

NITO puts competence at the centre. It's about asking the right questions: What can we do today? What are we missing? And what needs to be built up if nuclear power is to be assessed in a professionally sound way – without falling into the trap of wishful thinking?

This is what you will get in the webinar:

  • An updated review of the need for expertise related to nuclear power in the Norwegian context
  • Status and challenges today
  • What is needed for Norway to be able to make informed choices about the energy solutions of the future
  • Answers to submitted questions

The guests are two of the members of the nuclear power committee itself:

Asgeir Tomasgaard, Arne vatnøy og Lars Petter Maltby
Asgeir Tomasgaard, Arne Vatnøy and Lars Petter Maltby.

  • Lars Petter Maltby is the director of Prosess21 and an employee of the Research Council of Norway. He has been a key voice in the work of assessing nuclear power against Norwegian conditions.
  • Asgeir Tomasgard is a professor of operations analysis at NTNU and director of NTNU Energy and the NTNU Energy Transition Initiative. He brings a deep professional perspective on what the energy transition actually requires.

The two share insights from the committee's work and discuss both opportunities and dilemmas. The conversation was moderated by NITO's Head of Communications, Arne Vatnøy.
