Atex / Ex basic course for designers - Safety in hazardous areas

In a world where hydrogen and ammonia are used as energy sources, it is crucial to have the right expertise to ensure safe installations. This course gives you a solid understanding of the Atex/Ex regulations, which are essential for design in potentially explosive atmospheres.

  • Learn about the EU Atex Directive and the requirements for electrical and mechanical equipment
  • Gain insight into practical design for onshore and offshore projects
  • Prepare for future IECEx CoPC certification

The course gives you a comprehensive introduction to the regulations that apply to design in hazardous areas, including EN 60079-14 and EX-KOMP:2021. You will gain insight into choosing the right equipment and the design of installations, and how to avoid pitfalls in the design process.

With a focus on practical engineering and industry standards, you will be equipped to meet the challenges and opportunities of the future in the energy sector. This course is perfect for those who want to ensure that their projects comply with the strict safety requirements.

Course content

  • Key national regulations and ATEX directives
  • Certification ATEX and IECEx
  • Owner and user's requirements according to ATEX and national regulations
  • Fire and explosion properties related to flammable liquids and dust
  • Area classification, explosion risk assessment and EX zone classification
  • Mechanical equipment, packages for EX areas
  • Standardization for plants with potentially explosive atmospheres:
    • NEK420 Series for Onshore Facilities and General Requirements
    • IEC 61892-7 and NORSOK for offshore installations
    • 60092 Series for Marine Projects
  • Principles of Protection and Protection Levels (EPL) Gas/Dust
  • EX marking on equipment
  • Engineering; Installation and equipment issues
  • Ignition source control
  • Documentation
  • Brief review of inspection and maintenance in EX areas

The course also provides a basis for competence for any future IECEx CoPC (Certificate and Personnel Competence Scheme) certification at the Authorized Body (CB)

The increasing use of hydrogen and ammonia as new energy sources presents both opportunities and challenges, and it is crucial to ensure that the use of these energy sources is safe and compliant with relevant regulations.

Course instructor
