Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day 2026: "Plays a crucial role"

Behind almost all medical decisions lies a laboratory result. Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day 2026 is about how biomedical laboratory technicians ensure both quality and sustainability – in everyday life and in crisis.

On 15 April, the International Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day is celebrated, and it is the International Federation of Biomedical Laboratory Science (IFBLS) that decides the theme for the Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day.

For 2025 and 2026, the theme is: "Biomedical laboratory technicians promote sustainable laboratory services". This focuses on how biomedical laboratory technicians can contribute to both better diagnostics and a more environmentally friendly health service.

"This is a topic that is extremely important in today's troubled world," says Kaja Marienborg, chair of the scientific board of the NITO Institute of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences.

"Both in terms of overuse of laboratory services, but also in terms of sustainability and handling of emergencies. Biomedical laboratory technicians play a crucial role in this.

She emphasizes that the profession has a particularly important function in crisis situations:

"We will ensure patient safety in a future health service with scarce resources. We are key players in wise choices and in the guidance of test results. We are absolutely essential in the Norwegian blood preparedness, but also in the handling of multi-resistant bacteria in the event of war damage and when new pandemics hit," Marienborg points out.

Key in crisis and in everyday life

The biomedical laboratory technicians are not always visible to the patients, but the work carried out in the laboratories is absolutely central to diagnostics and treatment. From blood tests to microbiology, laboratory services form the basis for a large proportion of all medical decisions.

"The fact that we as doctors can be confident that the tests we order are taken care of in a good and correct way is incredibly important for us to be able to make correct diagnoses," says Anne-Karin Rime, president of the Norwegian Medical Association.

Quality in diagnostics is quality in treatment

The work of the biomedical laboratory technicians does not stop at the laboratory door – the results they deliver are the very basis for the decisions that are made further down the treatment chain. This is emphasized by Lill Sverresdatter Larsen, head of the Norwegian Nurses Association, in her video greeting to the biomedical laboratory scientists.

"The laboratory results delivered by the biomedical laboratory technicians are crucial for good decisions to be made," she says, and continues:

"As nurses, we know how closely our professions are connected. Quality in diagnostics is quality in treatment, and quality in treatment is patient safety.

Proud of the biomedical laboratory scientists' efforts

"This day is an opportunity to highlight the important work we do every single day," says Marienborg.

She is clear that the commitment runs deep:

"I am incredibly proud to represent all of you in my role as chair of the NITO Department of Biomedical Laboratory Sciences. "Congratulations on Biomedical Laboratory Technician Day.
