What is an analytics tool?
An analytics tool on a website collects information about those who visit the website. This usually includes:
- Device information: What kind of computer/smartphone is used, what operating system, browser, etc.
- Network and location information: IP address, network provider, and approximate geographic location
- Behavioral information: Which pages are visited, buttons clicked, forms filled in and the like
- Information from cookies: The tools store ID numbers or other information in cookies, so that they can tie together all the information they collect to the same user. This makes it possible to keep good statistics on what groups of users do, or to recognize individual users about whom information has already been collected
Some analytics tools are built into the website's functionality, and necessary to handle things like logins. Some collect information to generate reports and statistics in order to maintain and improve the website. Some send data to advertising platforms in order to report on the effectiveness of advertising campaigns or target ads to identified users.
Advertising platforms that receive this data may associate it with other information they have collected about you from other sources.
