NITO's needs survey 2025

More than six out of ten companies report that it is difficult to get hold of qualified engineers. The proportion has increased since 2024 and is now back at the level of 2022 and 2023.

Main challenges - today and in the future

A lack of qualified applicants (34 per cent) and fierce competition in the labour market (36 per cent) are highlighted as the most important reasons. The result is noticeable: 38 percent of the companies state that tasks are not solved when they cannot hire the engineers they need. In the central government sector, this applies to as much as 70 per cent. The majority of respondents (66 per cent) believe that it will be difficult to find qualified engineers for their business over the next three years.

About the needs survey

The needs survey maps how both private and public enterprises experience the current situation, and how they assess future opportunities to meet the need for engineers. By "engineers" we mean people with a 2- to 3-year technological college education.

The survey is a continuation of similar measurements from 2001 and annually from 2004 to 2024. Repeated questions provide a basis for comparison and show the development over time.
